Vikings lose in OT. Controversy over NFL's OT rules.

So it’s the NFC Championship game and two great teams are playing. The Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints. At the end of the 4th quarter, the score is tied at 28. According to NFL regulations, there is to be a coin flip and the winning team gets first possession. The first team to score wins. The game ends with the Saints making a Field Goal on their first drive and thereby winning the game. This is how the game is played, it’s how it has been for many many years.

Brett Favre, one of my least favorite players due to the constant media and PR games he plays with his “retiring” and then “not retiring” game, is now out of the playoffs and doesn’t get a chance at another SuperBowl Ring. What happens? There’s this big controversy about the Vikings not even getting a possession on the OT play to try to get the win and that isn’t fair. Waa Waa Waa.

A brief quote from Dan Pompei…

The current system is just not fair. The Vikings played their entire
season to get to the point when they had a chance to win it in overtime
and go to the Super Bowl, and they never even had a opportunity to
score.

Here’s my problem – they had 60 minutes of football, 4 full quarters, to outscore the Saints. They had plenty of time to get it done, and when it comes down to it, Brett didn’t come through for the team. Who knows – one more completion could have changed the outcome. There should be no complaining about fairness of OT rules. There should be no whining about losing the game to a coin flip. If they played a better game, if their defense would have done a better just stopping Drew Brees and the Saints Offense, if Brett would have played better offense, the OT would have never happened.

Don’t blame the rules, don’t blame the coin, don’t blame the NFL… You lost. Get over it. Oh, and this year, maybe you will retire for real? Lets hope!
