Summer Movie List… And a bit of feedback.

Well, this summer season has been a busy one for me in the movie realm. I haven’t been a theater frequenter in a long time, but I definitely kicked it up this year. Here’s my list and a bit of a feedback on the films.

Star Trek – Staring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, this was released as a prequel to the entire series of Star Trek Movies. Going in, I feared the worst. All these years and they are trying to go back to the beginning? Oh no! Well, I was quite pleasantly surprised. This movie is easily one of my top 3 over the whole summer season. Hats off to J.J. Abrams on directing one of the best movies of the year. I give this one 4.5 stars

Angels & Demons – Staring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, Ron Howard teaming up with Tom Hanks can only lead to good things, and they really hit this one out of the park! Easily the best movie I have seen in a long time, this is a must see! Out of 5 stars, I give it 6.

Terminator Salvation – Staring Christian Bale as John Connor, this movie was decent. I went into this one expecting the very worst and what can I say? It wasn’t bad. It was entertaining. Not the greatest in the world, but what do you want with a movie idea dragged through 3 sequels? If they knew what was good for them, they would have stopped after 2. I give it 3.5 stars.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian – Staring Ben Stiller, this movie was quite entertaining. With a great group of supporting actors / actresses, this movie kept my attention. Well done and family friendly. I give it 4 stars.

The Hangover – When this movie released, the media was all over it. “…is a funny movie, flat out, all the way through…” says Roger Ebert. Well, I have to say I was disappointed. Not to say that this movie wasn’t funny – it certainly had its moments. But, it was not as funny as the media hype made it seem to be. I give it 3 stars.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 – The start and end of this review – Denzel Washington. Enough said. You can’t go wrong seeing a movie in which he stars. He manages to take these roles and run with them. The movie itself (plot, story, etc) was not all that good, but Denzel made it worth watching. I give it 4 stars, noting that at least 1.5 of those are all Denzel.

The Proposal – Where do I start with this one? It was quite funny. The acting was superb. The story was well written. The directing was quality. Betty White is HILARIOUS!!! 4.5 Stars

My Sister’s Keeper – One word… ~FANTASTIC!~ This movie was excellent. This movie actually made me tear up. Very emotional film with a good story. I recommend it to everyone. 5 Stars.

Public Enemies – Mieh. The movie was good, but not as good as I expected. I was disappointed. 3 Stars.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – I walked into this movie expecting the worst. Harry Potter 1 and 2 were great. From there, the series starting taking a drastic turn downhill. Well, they took a total 180 with this one and hit it out of the park. Amazing. 4.5 Stars!

Orphan – Don’t go into this one expecting a ghostly horror movie. The trailers make it seem like a scary ghost story type plot. The truth is that it’s just one of those psychological thriller serial killer types. That said – it was still a pretty good movie. Setting aside my expectations, I did enjoy this flick. 3.5 – 4 Stars.

The Ugly Truth – It was actually really funny. I didn’t really expect it to be, but I laughed throughout this one quite a bit. This is how to do comedy. Must see! 4.5 Stars

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Well, it wasn’t horrible. That’s a good thing. This movie isn’t exactly something that must be seen, but it’s worth it. Wait for the DVD though – 8.00 for a movie is not worth this one. 3.5 Stars.

The Time Traveler’s Wife – Interesting movie. It’s definitely a chick flick. It’s definitely got those make you want to cry moments and it’s definitely got those funny moments. The movie made me appreciate my life and the wonderful people I have in it. 4 Stars.

Inglourious Basterds – Let’s preface this with a little perspective. I don’t like Quentin Tarantino films. Deathproof was a utter waste of time. Kill Bill was boring. This was his last chance for me. If this one didn’t entertain me, I would add him to my “refuse to see” list (right next to Will Ferrel). Well, Quentin, you’ve converted me. If you continue making movies like this one, I will watch them all! “…we in the killin’ Nazi business. And cousin, Business is a-boomin’…” 5 Stars!!!!

The Final Destination – Bah! How frustrating. FD1 and FD2 we AMAZING! FD3 was decent. This one – mediocre at best. It was clearly made to milk the FD wave and not with much thought into originality in mind. Despite seeing the 2-D version, it was clearly made for the 3-D viewing. It’s only saving grace – it was short. 2.5 Stars

Well, that’s my summer movie review. Comment!!!

  1. Nice reviews…I agree on The Hangover, not nearly as funny as the media made it out to be. Now I know what movies are worth watching 🙂
